At Kashima, the hot strip mill and continuous casters are directly linked to minimize energy consumption. Hot-rolled steel sheets are produced using advanced thickness-control technology for precisely controlled thickness. Moreover, Kashima's cold strip mill is the world's only pair-cross mill. This revolutionary mill facilitates the production of top-grade steel sheets of superlative flatness and precisely controlled thickness. The Company's Wakayama Steel Works produces high-quality steel sheet products such as high carbon steel and electro-magnetic steel sheets. To satisfy the ever increasing demand for lighter automobiles, Sumitomo Metals has developed the "Tailored Blank Method" laser welding technology which press-molds steel sheets after welding sheets of differing strengths and thicknesses. For the electric appliance industry, Sumitomo Metals has assembled a line of environmentally advanced products. For instance, we were among the first to introduce "Chrome-Free" steel sheet, which will be the standard product for the industry.
